"I Am" / "I Want to Become" Statements
Introduction
These statements are a way for me to express who I am now and who I aspire to be. The “I Am” statement reflects my identity, values, and experiences that have shaped my journey so far. The “I Want to Become” statement shares my vision for the future—my goals, passions, and the difference I hope to make. Together, they help tell the story of my growth, purpose, and commitment to making an impact.
(Fall 2023)
I Am:
I am Nabiha Mahmood, a senior at IU Indianapolis, double majoring in Psychology and Religious Studies. I am an aspiring mental health advocate, addiction neuroscience researcher, and a passionate leader dedicated to creating meaningful change in both academic and community settings. My journey has been shaped by personal experiences, academic rigor, and a deep commitment to understanding the complexities of human behavior. As an immigrant, mother, and scholar, I have navigated diverse challenges with resilience, transforming them into opportunities for growth. My experiences in research, leadership, and interfaith work reflect my dedication to fostering inclusion, advancing mental health awareness, and promoting scientific inquiry.
I Want to Become:
I want to become a leading researcher in addiction neuroscience, contributing to groundbreaking studies that unravel the intricate relationship between stress, mental health, and substance abuse. My goal is to lead a research lab focused on addiction, mentoring future scientists, and developing innovative approaches to mental health treatment. Beyond academia, I aspire to be an influential voice in public health, advocating for mental health awareness and policy reforms. I want to inspire others, especially underrepresented voices, to pursue their passions fearlessly, bridging the gap between science, culture, and community for a more compassionate and informed society.
