Honors Experience:
"Unbound: A Journey
Beyond Self"
Play
INTRODUCTION
This project is a creative exploration I undertook in my Honors Religious Studies course. Merging academic theory, mysticism, and performance, I wrote a play that brings together influential thinkers in an imagined dialogue. It challenged me intellectually, spiritually, and artistically.

Reflection
For my Honors experience during my undergraduate career, I had the privilege of engaging in a deeply transformative project titled "Unbound: A Journey Beyond Self," a play that I conceptualized and brought to life under the guidance of Professor Matthew G. Condon in the REL-R433 course. This experience not only challenged me intellectually but also spiritually, as it invited me to explore the intersection of religious theory, mythology, and the human search for the divine.

The play was a thought experiment designed to bring together the intellectual forces of Sigmund Freud, Mircea Eliade, Nancy Jay, and Sufi poets like Rumi, Iqbal, and Bulleh Shah. These figures, whose works explore the nature of divinity, ritual, sacrifice, and belief systems, came together in an imagined celestial space where their ideas could engage and evolve. As I wrote, I was constantly pushed to reflect on the complexity of religious and philosophical thought, drawing from sources that were as profound as they were diverse.

The greatest challenge of this project was not merely writing a play but engaging with these complex figures and their ideas in a way that was both respectful and transformative. Freud’s skepticism of religion, Eliade’s reverence for the sacred, Jay’s critique of patriarchal structures in sacrifice, and the mystical teachings of Rumi, Iqbal, and Bulleh Shah presented a rich tapestry of contrasting views that were difficult to reconcile. Through this intellectual dialogue, I explored how each thinker’s ideas could complement and challenge each other, revealing a more nuanced understanding of the divine and human experience.

This project also stretched my creative abilities, as I integrated not only academic research but also poetry and visual elements. The incorporation of AI-generated art and my personal website added an artistic layer to the project, creating an immersive experience for viewers beyond the written script.

Reflecting on this Honors experience, I realize how it pushed me beyond the confines of conventional scholarship. It was not just about reading and interpreting texts but about engaging with these ideas on a deeper, more personal level. I felt a profound connection between the academic and the spiritual, as I sought to weave together different belief systems and present them in a way that respected both their complexity and their beauty.
As I look back on this project, I feel immense pride in how it shaped my intellectual and personal growth. It encouraged me to think critically, to challenge preconceived notions, and to embrace the beauty of diverse perspectives. It was a reminder that the pursuit of knowledge is not just about finding answers but about embracing the questions and exploring the journey itself.
